Castro Hospitalized

Cuba’s leader, Fidel Castro, was rushed to hospital Tuesday for emergency surgery, handing temporary control of the country to his brother Raúl, the first time he has ceded power in 47 years. The Cuban leader also handed over responsibility for energy, health and education to four members of the country’s Politburo. Castro issued a statement saying he would be away from his duties recuperating for “several weeks”. He also postponed his 80th birthday celebrations, due to take place later this month. Last month Castro traveled to Argentina to attend a Mercosur summit. It is believed the trip contributed to his health problems.
